Fabric Dying--Resist Using Potato Dextrin

Tuesday, October 16, 2018

1) I started by dying fabric, letting it dry, steaming it, washing it, and drying it again.

2) Next, I mixed 1/2 cup boiling water and 1 cup potato starch.

3) I applied the potato dextrin to the each swatch with a rubber tool.

4) I let the swatches dry for 18 hours.

5) I applied discharge (chemical water, thiox, soda ash) to the swatches,. The discharge went in between the cracks of the potato dextrin to discolor the fabric in those spots. I dried them with a blow drier and ironed them.

6) I tried to crack the larger pieces of the potato dextrin off, then I washed the swatched in water until the rest of the potato dextrin came off.

7) I hung the swatches to dry.

10) I ironed the swatches.

11) I cut the edges with pinking shears to prevent fraying.
