Pattern: McCall's 8105 https://simplicity.com/mccalls/m8105
Pattern Description:
I picked the McCall's 8105 dress pattern because I love the wrap look around the top. This dress features a wrapped-look in front, bow tie in back, and flowy skirt with a slit. This wrap look is purely aesthetic, and the dress actually zips in the back. The look is achieved with two long strips that tie in the back over the zipper.
For the pattern, I chose a thin fabric in a dark color because I wanted to not line the skirt so that it could have a soft, flowy look.
Pattern Sizing:
I used size 12
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Yes, the pattern looked like the photo except that I had not realized how high the slit would be from the photo.
Were the instructions easy to follow?
Yes
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
I loved the wrap look on the top front. I disliked the fit of the dress (it sagged a lot and needed several modifications in order for it to fit, the straps were much too long, and the slit was way too high to wear).
Fabric Used:
Green Muted Dragonfly Stretch Silky Print https://www.joann.com/green-muted-dragonfly-stretch-silky-print-fabric/19126911.html
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
The straps were too long and needed adjustment from the instructions on the pattern. The front did not fit well and needed modifications. The straps were originally too far apart, and the center front sags too much so the lining would show, so I had to keep adjusting and re-sewing to get it to fit more appropriately.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
I do not recommend this pattern and am not planning to make it again due to the very high slit, the excessive fabric for the back bow, and the fit of the front concerning the width of the straps. However, I would be interested in using the wrap look on the front of a bodice and then sewing it into the side seams or the center back so that I can eliminate the bow.
Conclusion:
I do not like this pattern and do not recommend it or plan to ever use it again.
Pros:
I loved the top front wrap look
Cons:
The wrap look takes lots of extra fabric and the bow is heavy from all the fabric that it uses
The slit on the skirt goes up very high (up to the waist), so this dress does not feel stable for wearing on windy days
The straps were too long and needed adjustment from the instructions on the pattern
The straps look like different widths in the photos because they did not lay flat well
The front did not fit well and needed modifications. The straps were originally too far apart, and the center front sags too much so the lining would show.
Overall:
I do not recommend this pattern and am not planning to make it again due to the very high slit, the excessive fabric for the back bow, and the fit of the front concerning the width of the straps. However, I would be interested in using the wrap look on the front of a bodice and then sewing it into the side seams or the center back so that I can eliminate the bow.
